Gas masks and bricks back in fashion

An Austrian designer is staging a fashion spectacular featuring models wearing gas masks and bricks on their heads and dresses made of pills.

Klagenfurt-born designer Lisa D says she wants to raise awareness of what she calls the "madness of the consumer world".

Together with an 80-strong team she is presenting what she calls "ethically correct fashion and fashion concepts for critical consumers".

She says the aim of her Dry Clean Show is to raise awareness of the major fashion chains' use of labour in developing countries where workers "get paid next to nothing".

Lisa D, whose real name is Elisabeth Prantner, said: "In my performance I tried to exaggerate what is actually happening in the fashion business.

"Sometimes I think workers in low-wage countries can't be treated any worse and then I hear about much worse conditions. That's what I wanted to show in my fashion performance.
